Automobiles in German City Found Smeared with Nazi Symbols in Blood, Law Enforcement Confirm

Authorities stated they were contacted by a resident who noticed a car in Hanau covered with reddish fluid

Around 50 vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the Germany's municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.

Cars, building surfaces and mailboxes were marked, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they stated in a statement.

Law enforcement state they were alerted late on Wednesday, when a man noticed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored liquid.

The liquid had been placed in the form of a swastika, they added.

Officers then located multiple other marked vehicles and building exteriors in the surrounding area.

These symbols are banned in Germany under regulations outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.

Officials state early analysis indicate the fluid was probably blood from a person.

"There is still no indication as to its source; investigators are not yet aware of any harm in connection with the occurrence," they added.

Local authorities said they were working "to resolve the mystery" and have asked to the public for details.

A high-ranking political figure said the incident made him stunned and had to be solved rapidly.

"This act affects the very heart of Hanau and revives the trauma of the extremist terrorist attack in 2020," he wrote on online, mentioning the murder of nine people by a shooter focusing on people of migrant background in 2020.
