Conservative responses to the partial release of files involving the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some supporters of the previous administration highlighting the prominent appearance of Bill Clinton and other Democratic figures in images, while others lamented how heavy redactions cast Donald Trump and GOP members in a negative manner.
Justice Department Defends Censorship with Strong Hyperbole
Administration representatives justified the redactions with fervent exaggerated language. “Never in U.S. the nation's history has a President or the Justice Department been so transparent with the public about such a delicate law enforcement issue,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a detailed letter outlining the redaction process.
Questions Raised by Redactions
While the former president's identity and image are visible in portions of the documents, the widespread black blocks raise significant questions about the information may be hidden behind them. A number of conservative lawmakers swiftly called for increased transparency.
“The public are furious and walking away,” posted Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the censorship break the law, and implied that a subsequent legislature may attempt to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, this document release egregiously does not adhere to both the spirit and the wording of the act,” he continued.
Some Conservative Commentators Rally Behind the Disclosure
However, some rightwing pundits and Trump allies swung firmly in support of the administration.
The release—from a justice department led by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes scores of pages that are entirely redacted, and many of the individuals depicted in pictures have their identities blacked out.
But a few are not, featuring high-profile figures like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, especially, enabled some rightwing figures to go on the attack.
“This is pretty ironic how the Democrats wrongly claimed President Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil documents that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” stated conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a female that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one reason Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Former President Spokesperson Releases Statement
Clinton has consistently said he knew of no criminal activity by Epstein and has not been alleged to have participated in any misconduct. “The White House hasn’t been hiding those documents for months only to release them late on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“The release is about shielding officials from what comes next, or from what they will try and conceal permanently. Therefore they can publicize as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photos as they want, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the statement added.
Overall Rightwing Comment Seems Muted
Nonetheless, overall comment on the right was relatively subdued following the disclosure, especially when juxtaposed against the loud calls for action that came before the legislative vote to enact a bill mandating the documents' publication.
The commentator, who recently accepted media access at the Pentagon, had been among the loudest advocates for a complete release. In February, she chastised the administration broadly and Bondi in particular after a group of rightwing influencers were given hard-copy folders of materials that contained no previously unseen data.
